Join us on Wednesday October 19th for the first event of the 2011-2012 season as we tour the Best Buy Canada’s Distribution Centre in Langley, B.C. The company and facility have some unique challenges and approaches to business and logistics which we make this a can’t miss tour.

• Dual Brand Strategy – while much of the public is unaware, Best Buy & Future Shop actually have the same parent company and actively establish locations close to each other to enhance market share. The facility serves retail locations for both chains and will share some of their challenges and successes.

• Helping Out Santa! – Best Buy’s product lines are at the top of a lot of peoples Christmas Wish Lists so each year Best Buy sets up a temporary separate warehouse (this year’s operation will be 200,000 sq.ft.) to address the seasonal needs. Staff will discuss how they set up, operate and shut down this temporary warehouse all within a 12 week period.

• Security is an increasing concern for many warehouses these days and with a facility full of some of the most sought after electronics on the planet, Best Buy needs to ensure their company is protected. One strategy you will see when you come in the door is the “full body scanners”.

Please note you will not be able to take your cell phone, PDA’s or other personal electronics into the facility. Also you will have to submit to a full body scan when leaving the facility. Join us on Tuesday June 7th for the 29th Annual CMHDS Charity Classic Golf Tournament & Dinner at the Coyote Creek Golf Club.  This event is an opportunity to spend a day in the sun, enjoy some golf, some friends and some food.

We will also be holding the CMHDS Annual General Meeting where we will review the events of the year and elect the new Board of Directors for the 2011-2012 season. Not much of a golfer? Then come out for the AGM (free, of course) or just for dinner.

Located on 73 acres in South Surrey, Atlas Logistics (a division of VersaCold) is a 408,000 sq.ft. facility which distributes perishable and frozen products, shipping over 650,000 cases per week  to 87 stores, some as far away as Prince Rupert.

The facility which employees a staff of over 250 people uses RF controlled WMS Voice Picking, RF directed put-away and replenishment and RF directed loading via truck mounted terminals. Equipment includes 75 Triple Pallet Jacks, 50 Reach Trucks and 40 Dock Stockers.

CSA Racking Management Course – Inspecting & Maintaining Steel Storage Racks (in collaboration with the Industrial Accident Prevention Association)

On April 5th & 6th, the CMHDS brings the full day CSA Racking Management Course to the Lower Mainland.

We are also happy to announce that we are able to offer this course to CMHDS & CSSE members at $449.00 per person which is a 20% discount off the public rate of $565.00 – that’s a savings of almost $120 per person or like getting four people trained for the price of three!

This one day course introduces participants to the inspection and maintenance sections of the new CSA User Guide for Steel Storage Racks. In this course, which refers to the guide and the new racking standard, participants will gain experience with:

• Recognizing general rack hazards
• Identifying key areas to check when inspecting racks
• Recognizing rack damage, such as damaged posts
• Gauging the severity of damage
• Understanding rack modifications and the need for pre-start reviews (PSRs); and
• Conducting a rack inspection through a comprehensive simulated exercise

Proper inspection and maintenance of steel storage racks can save lives, and your company from prosecution and fines as well as costly property losses and downtime.

Join us on Wednesday March 30th, 2011 as we tour the Steels Industrial Products Distribution Centre in Surrey, BC.

Established in 1955 Steels provides insulation, roofing, masonry and log homes supplies, equipment and materials to contractors, developers and architects throughout their nine locations across BC & Alberta.

This facility boasts a number of unique features including:

• A Four-Way Forklift (yes it travels sideways as well as backwards and forwards)
• Serving as DC to 8 facing branches and in addition serves as a retail location that requires pick-on-demand orders.
• Due to product diversification Steels operates as four warehouses in one including Insulation, Roofing, Masonry & Tilt Up Construction Rentals.
• A Wet/Dry Sprinkler System (as it located outside the pipes are empty to prevent freezing  and in case of a fire the system must pump to the farthest sprinkler head within 30 seconds. This results in Steels having the third largest fire pump in Surrey).
• Unique Racking Numbering System & use of Superbins
• DC wide use of an integrated WMS/Bar Code System
• Cantilever & Push Back Racking
